Law enforcement in Sacramento are examining a violent incident that unfolded on the evening of April 18 at Howe Park in Sacramento at the moment Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were dispersing a large unsanctioned party of multiple hundreds of people.
How It Started
Deputies first arrived at the park around 6:30 Saturday evening after being notified of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. Not long after, a second call came in mentioning an alleged brawl unfolding at Howe Park.
A sheriff's airship scanned the area from the air but found nothing to substantiate the fight report. However, deputies found that a crowd of several hundred had assembled at the park in an unauthorized manner.
The Dispersal and Shooting
Responding units began the process of clearing the park by forming a perimeter and issuing commands over loudspeakers telling the assembled crowd to clear out. About 15 minutes were given for attendees to disperse.
As the crowd was being cleared that between 20 and 25 rounds echoed through the night. The barrage of gunfire sent the crowd running in all directions. Responding personnel swiftly started finding those who had been shot.
Those Who Were Hit
By the time the scene was secured, four people were found to have been shot. Those injured — including a female and three males ranging in age through their in their 20s at the time of the incident — were airlifted or driven to Sacramento area hospitals. Medical personnel stated that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, Howe Park shooting Sacramento one of the four had moderate gunshot wounds, and one person's injuries were considered minor. As of last report, no fatalities were reported and all four were stable.
Metro Fire Sacramento provided support and helped triage those with gunshot wounds before they were taken to the hospital.
Crime Scene Evidence
The primary shooting scene appears to have unfolded adjacent to the Cottage Way side of the park adjacent to the Home Depot store located at the 2200 block of Howe Ave. Law enforcement investigators found additional spent rounds along Cottage Way. Bullet holes were also found in the wrought iron fence adjacent to the Home Depot. This evidence confirmed that at least one of the shooters had been sending rounds south from the Cottage Way area toward the Home Depot. That Home Depot location was put under lockdown for a period of time. Crime scene technicians and detectives kept processing evidence throughout the night.
Suspects Detained
Information relayed over scanner radio traffic showed that a Kia was contacted by law enforcement in Solano County California. Four suspects were taken into custody. Sacramento law enforcement were traveling to Solano County to collect the individuals for investigation. Footage analyzed by investigators showed that there were two gunmen.
